Dr. Eduardo Mezzera has more than 40 years of valuable experience in advising national and international companies in the structuring of their activities, in a wide range of industries, which include tobacco, alcohol, food, medicines and various consumer items. Eduardo Mezzera’s practice includes international trade, antitrust and competition law, distribution contracts, and tax advice. Likewise, he frequently represents our clients in trials before the courts and regulatory entities of these areas of law.
Eduardo Mezzera was appointed to participate in the drafting of several laws and decrees related to various areas of law, including unfair competition and regulation of private developments and real estate.
He has been an Arbitrator of the National Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay since 1997 and an Arbitrator representing Uruguay in MERCOSUR (in accordance with the Treaty of Asunción) since 1993.
Dr. Mezzera was Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs (1990 – 1993), serving on several occasions in the position of Minister.
Illustrative experience
o Successfully litigated before the Supreme Court of Justice, several consecutive cases for the application of unconstitutional taxes on behalf of an important firm dedicated to the commercialization of alcoholic beverages.
o From 2004 to July 2008, together with the then partner Dr. Francisco Etcheverry, he led a team of more than 70 lawyers in charge of the liquidation of all the banks affected as a result of the biggest financial crisis in the history of Uruguay. (2002), on behalf of Thesis (Uruguay) Administradora de Fondos de Inversión SA
o He was for more than 20 years Honorary Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay.
o For more than 16 years he was legal advisor to the Ministry of Industry and Energy, in charge of the Energy, Industrial Property and Technology divisions.
o He is a permanent Arbitrator of Uruguay for the solution of controversies in the Treaty of Asunción and Mediator of the Center for Conciliation and Arbitration of the Montevideo Stock Exchange.
